Note: No Class on 28th May. Next Class: Kennel Club Good Citizen Tests - Thursday 4th June, 7-9pm
Rally Obedience, often called just 'Rally' or 'Rally O', is a lively team sport in which you and your dog work through a course of numbered signs, performing an exercise at each station. The Royal Kennel Club describes it as an “obedience” exercise obstacle course, and the sport uses a wide range of pre-set exercises, from simple sits, stands and downs to turns, call-fronts, figure 8s and serpentines. A round is usually brisk, short, and full of teamwork, which helps keep the pace engaging for both dog and handler.
One of Rally’s biggest strengths is that it suits a very wide range of dogs and people. No previous experience is necessary to get started, and dogs do not have to be pedigree dogs to compete. The early levels are on lead with an emphasis on loose-lead work, while later levels are off lead, so beginners can start gently and progress as their partnership improves. Dogs can enter from 6 months at Levels 1 and 2, from 12 months at Level 3 and above, and there is also a Veteran class for dogs aged 7 or over.
People often get involved because rally is enjoyable, practical, and confidence-building. It rewards clear communication, attention, and enthusiasm rather than perfection alone. Progression is based on scores rather than wins or placings - you are basically competing against yourself which makes it an excellent choice for people who want to improve their dog’s manners, deepen their bond, and enjoy a structured activity together without the pressure that can sometimes come with other more competitive sports. Handlers may use verbal encouragement throughout the round which also helps make it feel friendly and cooperative.
You can start at home with short, positive sessions using basic heelwork, sits, downs, turns, and simple changes of pace. Surrey Dog Training Society have monthly Rally classes to progress to covering all the exercises needed in the different levels of Rally. This uses the specific Royal Kennel Club signs for each exercise and other equipment such as cones, jumps and hoops. To participate, your dog needs a regular, flat collar and lead.
There are many Rally competitions across the country where the dog and handler partnerships can be tested. There is also the opportunity to enter Rally Online competitions where a round is recorded and the video is marked remotely.
Please see the Class Schedule for the next Surrey Dog Training Society Rally class. These are held from 7-9pm at Worplesdon Memorial Hall. Contact Us if you would like more information about Rally or wish to attend our next training class.
