Note: No Class on 28th May. Next Class: Kennel Club Good Citizen Tests - Thursday 4th June, 7-9pm
Competitive obedience is a structured dog sport that tests how well a dog and handler work together as a team. The Royal Kennel Club describes it as testing the abilities of well-trained dogs, and says it begins with puppy training and builds through exercises such as heelwork on and off lead, recall, send-away work, retrieve exercises, and scent discrimination. Because the exercises start simply and progress in stages, it can suit a very wide range of dogs and handlers, from newcomers to experienced competitors.
People get involved because obedience is rewarding, practical, and enjoyable: it gives dogs a clear job to do, strengthens communication, and helps turn everyday training into a focused partnership. Training can be one of the most rewarding parts of dog ownership, and that no previous experience is necessary to get started. Benefits include improved focus, better manners, more confidence in different environments, and a stronger bond between dog and owner.
The equipment needed is usually straightforward. In the ring, dogs may wear a smooth collar or half-check collar with the lead attached, and retrieve exercises use a dumb-bell or article. At home, the best starting point is short, positive training sessions in a calm environment, where distractions are controllable and the dog can learn the basics before trying them elsewhere.
If you want to try it for fun, start at home with heelwork, sits, stays, recalls, and retrieve games. Surrey Dog Training Society Obedience Classes can then help to refine these skills and teach you how to hone these skills further. There are seven levels of competition, beginning with the basic introductory class and progressing through to Class C, the highest and most difficult. Dogs can compete from 6 months of age, but are never too young or too old to learn the key elements of Competitive Obedience.
